APGA wins all 21 chairmanship, councillorship seats in Anambra LG poll

The All Progressives Grand Alliance has won all the chairmanship and councillorship positions in the August 29, 2026 local government elections in Anambra State.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Genevieve Osakwe, announced the results at the ANSIEC office in Awka on Sunday.

Osakwe said APGA won all 21 chairmanship seats, while candidates of the party also won the councillorship positions in the 21 local government areas, as declared at the ward level.

Declaring the election peaceful and fair, Osakwe said the commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

Although the ruling APGA was the only party that fielded candidates in 20 of the 21 LGAs across the state, the Young Progressives Party fielded candidates in only Anambra East LGA.

Apart from YPP, which fielded candidates in Anambra East LGA, no other opposition political party fielded candidates in the election.

None of the opposition candidates, political parties or their agents was present at the ANSIEC office when the results were declared.

The ANSIEC chairman, who announced the scores and names of the APGA candidates one after the other, declared them winners and returned them elected, having scored the highest number of votes.

She said, “All the candidates of APGA have been officially declared winners as Councilors and Executive Council Chairmen-elects.

“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas (LGAs) in Anambra State and it was conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner in line with the state electoral laws and guidelines.”

She commended the people of Anambra State for trooping out en masse to exercise their civic rights, while also appreciating security agencies for ensuring peace and orderliness throughout the process.

Osakwe said, “This is to affirm the result of the chairmanship and councilorship election held on August 29, 2026. The commission carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure that there were no mistakes.

“Election held at all the polling units across Anambra State on August 29, and it was free, fair and credible.”

Our correspondent observed that, apart from some officials and party agents of APGA, no other political party official was present at the ANSIEC office when the results were declared on Sunday.
