APC Plans to Choose Top Officials Through Unanimous Agreement at Upcoming Convention

The All Progressives Congress has announced its intention to use a consensus approach to select its national leadership during the party's convention, slated for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.

Mary Ikoku, the Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity for the APC National Convention 2026, revealed this plan during an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.

Regarding elective positions during primaries, Ikoku stated that the party has yet to decide on the approach, noting that decisions may be influenced by local political factors.

She clarified that while the party is adopting a consensus approach for the convention, the method for handling elective positions remains uncertain, as "politics is local" and consensus may not be achievable in every instance.

Ikoku also discussed the Electoral Act's provisions, which mandate online registration of members within a specified timeframe and outline acceptable methods for candidate selection, posing challenges for some parties due to varying levels of preparedness.

According to Ikoku, the Electoral Act allows for direct primaries and consensus, while indirect primaries are no longer permitted, and parties that struggle with these requirements may be seen as unprepared.

She emphasized that proactive planning is essential for political parties, as waiting until election season to prepare can lead to significant challenges.

Ahead of the convention, the party has begun screening aspirants for key positions in its National Working Committee, including National Chairman aspirant Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary hopeful Ajibola Basiru.

Other NWC members seeking re-election include National Youth Leader Dayo Israel, Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori, National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana, National Woman Leader Mary Alile Idele, and National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, among others.
