APC National Working Committee vets Abiodun for Senatorial election bid

The Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, was screened by the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress on Friday, ahead of the party’s primaries for the Ogun East Senatorial District.

This was disclosed in a Facebook post by the Senior Special Assistant to Ogun Governor on New Media, Emmanuel Ojo, stating that the screening exercise, conducted by the APC NWC Screening Committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, is part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking shortly after the exercise on Friday, Abiodun said his aspiration is driven by a desire to deepen development and effective representation for Ogun East.

“I reaffirm my commitment to quality representation, grassroots development, economic growth, and sustained progress for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District,” he said.

He also expressed appreciation to party leaders and stakeholders for their support.

“I appreciate the leadership and stakeholders of our great party for their continued confidence in my aspiration. I remain committed to the ideals and progressive vision of the APC,” the governor added.

The screening, according to the statement is part of APC’s internal procedures to vet aspirants seeking elective positions under the party platform.

The governor was said to have appeared before the committee as an aspirant for the Ogun East Senatorial seat.

“The screening exercise is part of the party’s internal process ahead of the forthcoming elections,” the statement noted.

It added that Abiodun assured the committee of his readiness to serve with “responsibility, experience and integrity.”

Abiodun’s screening comes days after he was adopted as a consensus candidate for the Ogun East senatorial race during a major APC stakeholders’ meeting in Ijebu-Ode.

At the meeting, party leaders, including former Senator Lekan Mustapha, reportedly backed the governor, citing his experience and capacity to represent the district effectively.

“We will put a body together to deliver this message to our Governor that he has been adopted as the consensus candidate,” Mustapha was quoted as saying.

The meeting also brought together APC stakeholders across local governments, including former and serving lawmakers, councillors, and youth and women groups.

Abiodun had earlier submitted his nomination and expression of interest forms at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, signalling his intention to move from the executive to the legislative arm of government after his tenure.

He had said his administration would continue to focus on infrastructure, education, agriculture, and social welfare under its development agenda.

“We have been open, transparent, inclusive and accountable. We will not rest on our oars,” he had said during his earlier declaration.
