APC lawmakers praise legislation for regional law enforcement, vow to implement measures to prevent misuse

The Forum of Progressive Speakers of State Legislators has hailed the passage of the State Police Bill as a major breakthrough for Nigeria’s security, pledging full support for its rollout while acknowledging lingering concerns over governors’ powers.

This was contained in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, by the Forum under the All Progressives Congress, APC.

PUNCH Online observed that the bill was passed yesterday, (Wednesday), at the Senate Plenary session amidst increasing kidnappings, banditry, and communal clashes across the country.

According to the statement, signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Hon. Haruna Dangyatim, Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, a copy of which was obtained by PUNCH correspondent described the Senate’s action as a historic turning point for Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

He said the Forum commendably received and praised the passage of the landmark State Police Bill into law by the Senate.

“The passage of this bill is a resounding victory for effective governance and community-focused policing,” Dangyatin stated.

He noted that decentralising policing is a critical step toward safeguarding lives and property across all subnationals.

n

“For years, the clamour for a security structure that understands the local terrain has been loud,” the Chairman added.

“With this enactment, we are empowering states to better protect their people and respond swiftly to security threats,” he said.

Dangyatin stressed that the new law would foster closer collaboration between citizens and law enforcement.

To ensure a smooth transition, the Forum pledged its unalloyed support and commitment to the implementation process amid concerns that state governors could misuse the outfit.

He, however assured the public and stakeholders that APC-led State Houses of Assembly will fast-track the ratification of the bill.

“State Houses of Assembly under the APC banner will create robust legal frameworks tailored to the unique security needs of their states,” Dangyatin said.

Furthermore, the Forum also committed to designing stringent oversight mechanisms for the new state police outfits to address fears of abuse by state executives.

“We will ensure state policing operates within the bounds of human rights, professionalism, and the rule of law,” he noted.

On funding, Dangyatin said the Forum will work with state executives to secure adequate budgetary allocations.

n

He said, “This will cover the training, equipping, and welfare of the new state police personnel.”

The Forum therefore extended profound appreciation to the National Assembly, the Executive, and all stakeholders who championed the bill.

Dangyatin expressed confidence that the bold step will significantly reduce crime, restore absolute peace, and drive economic prosperity across Nigeria.
