Anti-Graft Agency Seizes N5.8 Billion in Just Half a Year

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has made significant strides in its anti-corruption efforts, recovering a substantial N5.79bn in proceeds of crime between January and June 2026, which is crucial for bolstering accountability and national security.

This recovery is particularly important as corruption continues to pose a threat to Nigeria's security architecture by misdirecting resources meant for essential public services, according to the commission.

The ICPC disclosed these findings in a performance report, which revealed that the total cash recovered during the review period stood at N5,789,681,925.02.

The commission views this recovery as part of a broader strategy to protect public funds, reinforce institutional integrity, and foster transparency across public institutions, ultimately contributing to a more stable and secure environment for all Nigerians.

Corrupt practices remain a critical factor in Nigeria's complex security challenges, as they divert essential resources from security infrastructure and erode public trust, highlighting the need for the ICPC's efforts to curb this threat.

Beyond asset recovery, the commission received 271 petitions during the six-month period and assigned 234 cases for investigation, demonstrating its commitment to addressing corruption.

Of these cases, 25 were successfully filed in court, resulting in 20 convictions, which underscores the ICPC's effectiveness in combating corruption.

The commission also intensified its corruption prevention efforts by conducting 33 systems studies and corruption risk assessments, as well as carrying out 42 corruption monitoring exercises.

Furthermore, the ICPC inaugurated 58 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units across ministries, departments, and agencies, expanding its reach and impact.

The commission expanded public enlightenment on anti-corruption through 291 sensitisation sessions and conferences, reaching a total of 199,291 participants nationwide, which is a significant achievement.

In addition, the ICPC established 68 Anti-Corruption Clubs as part of its efforts to promote integrity among young Nigerians, which is crucial for building a corruption-free future.
