Anti-graft agency frees campaigners Randy Peter, Mama Pee

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has freed Randy Peter and Mama Pee, two activists who had been summoned to the agency's Abuja office, after they complied with the invitation and underwent an extensive questioning session.

Their release occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday, with instructions to report back to the commission on Thursday, as revealed by their colleague, Justice Cracks.

Justice Cracks, who had accompanied the duo to the EFCC headquarters, shared details of the development on X, stating that the invitation was extended to @Peter4Nigeria and @MamaPee__ by the @officialEFCC.

According to Justice Cracks, he personally escorted the activists to the EFCC office on the afternoon of 15th July 2026, at approximately 1:00 p.m., which turned out to be a lengthy day.

The activists spent around 11 hours at the commission's office before being allowed to leave at about 12:00 a.m., with directives to return the following day, 16th July 2026.

Justice Cracks expressed relief, stating that, for the time being, everything is fine, and also shared a video recorded from the car park of the EFCC headquarters while waiting for the activists to be released.

Earlier concerns had emerged on Wednesday regarding the whereabouts of the duo after Esther Umoh, the 2023 campaign photographer for National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi, disclosed that they had not left the commission's office several hours after responding to the invitation.

Umoh had written on X that @MamaPee__ and @Peter4Nigeria honored the EFCC's invitation in Abuja but had yet to be released by the commission as she posted her message.

The prolonged meeting sparked speculation on social media that the activists might have been taken into custody.

However, Justice Cracks later confirmed that both activists had been released and were scheduled to return to the EFCC headquarters on Thursday, as instructed by the commission.

The EFCC has not yet publicly disclosed the reason behind inviting the activists.
