Anambra greenlights ₦640m initiatives, unveils overhaul to combat erosion and other issues

The Anambra State Government has underscored its dedication to fostering an inclusive and sustainable development framework, as evidenced by its latest policy initiatives and project approvals designed to combat erosion, bolster education, enhance healthcare delivery, and stimulate economic growth, with a total of ₦640 million allocated for key infrastructural projects.

These projects aim to promote social cohesion, drive economic expansion, and improve public service delivery across the state, as announced by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, in a statement released on Tuesday.

The statement followed the third meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council, which took place at the Government House in Awka on June 22, where several pivotal decisions were made, including the continuation of market regeneration efforts, the enforcement of environmental laws, and the sustenance of free education and free antenatal care.

A school adoption programme was also introduced, allowing individuals and corporate entities to adopt public schools and contribute to their development, as part of the administration's Public-Private-Community Partnership framework, known as "Soludozie Anambra", which is expected to yield improvements in school infrastructure and learning outcomes.

The Council expressed concerns regarding traders who flout market boundaries by displaying goods along roadsides, posing significant traffic obstruction and safety risks, and warned that such practices would be addressed through the relocation and enclosure of certain markets to prevent encroachment on major roads.

Erosion was identified as the most pressing environmental challenge facing the state, with its worsening impact attributed to human activities such as improper stormwater drainage, construction on flood channels, and indiscriminate tree felling, prompting the government to resolve to enforce the state's environmental law.

The law mandates households to construct catch pits to reduce surface runoff and protect infrastructure, and the Council reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining flagship social policies, including free education and free antenatal and delivery services for pregnant women.

A proposed law was also approved, aiming to establish minimum standards for administrators of public and private primary and secondary schools in the state, which is expected to curb arbitrary fees, regulate school practices, and prohibit the barring of students from reusing textbooks.

The government allocated ₦237 million for the remodelling of Afouzo Market in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, which was awarded to Crystal Dove Construction Company Ltd, and approved ₦402.83 million for the supply of routine antenatal medicines and related services under the state's free antenatal and delivery services programme.

The latter contract was awarded to Jessy Pharmaceutical Company Ltd and Award Global Company Ltd, and the Council emphasized that these reforms reflect Governor Chukwuma Soludo's commitment to building a livable and prosperous Anambra through strategic infrastructure development, environmental protection, and human capital investment.
