Anambra Governor Soludo turns down demand for ceremonial attire for religious leaders

Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, has turned down a request from Catholic Knights seeking financial support from the state government to sew regalia for their members, citing that public funds cannot be used for such private purposes.

Soludo made this statement during the All Knights Day celebration at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where he addressed the Catholic Diocese of Awka on Sunday, emphasizing that public resources will not be allocated for private institutional regalia.

However, the governor agreed to support the Knights' charity initiatives, including visits to orphanages, demonstrating his willingness to collaborate with the group on certain projects.

Soludo urged the Knights to embody the principles of their faith, stating "I will not deploy state resources for purchasing of private institutional regalia" and emphasizing the importance of living by Christian values rather than just bearing titles.

He also spoke about the true meaning of devotion to Christ, saying it is reflected in keeping His commandments through discipline, humility, and courage, and that leaders must demonstrate courage in promoting societal transformation.

Soludo cautioned the Knights against isolating themselves from the community, encouraging them to engage with the people and maintain their prophetic voice, while also commending the church leadership for promoting the common good.

The governor specifically praised the diocese for its stance against societal ills and highlighted the success of the Anambra State Burial Law, which has helped promote "befitting living and decent burial" for citizens by curbing excessive funeral expenses.

Soludo also announced that the government is taking action against "fake pastors" who allegedly exploit vulnerable individuals by preaching a distorted version of salvation, revealing that several suspects are in custody and making confessional statements.

The governor reiterated the importance of building a "New Anambra" founded on integrity and free from deception, emphasizing the value of hard work and the church's teachings on this matter.

The event included a Pontifical Mass celebrated by the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, and a homily delivered by the Diocesan Secretary, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Iheanacho, who reflected on the role of the Holy Spirit in guiding the Knights.
