Anambra exonerates security advisor of accusations of improper sexual behavior

The Anambra State Government has concluded its investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct made by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu against the Security Adviser to the state governor, Ken Emeakayi, and found the claims to be "false and misleading", according to a statement released by the government.

The allegations, which were made some weeks ago, accused Emeakayi of having an improper relationship with Mrs Mmasi Nwangwu, the wife of the detained native doctor, Chukwudozie Nwangwu, also known as "Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki", and generated controversy and public debate surrounding the prosecution and conviction of "Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki".

A fact-finding committee, constituted by the state government to probe the allegations, submitted its report on May 11, 2026, and exonerated the security adviser, as stated in a press statement released by a media aide to the Anambra State governor, Mazi Ejimofor Opara.

The committee, chaired by the Attorney-General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, took evidence from all the accused parties, including Mr Ken Emeakayi, Mrs Mmasi Nwangwu, and counsel to Mr Nwangwu, who testified on his behalf.

However, Prof. Odinkalu failed to honour the committee's invitations, despite being issued several notices to respond via text or to join a virtual or physical meeting to disclose the source of his information or provide evidence supporting his allegation.

The committee found the testimonies of the accused parties to be consistent in establishing that Mr Ken Emeakayi and Mrs Nwangwu did not have any personal or improper relationship, and concluded that the allegation is "false and misleading".

The Anambra State Government reiterated its commitment to due process, fairness, and the protection of the reputation of public officers from malicious and unsubstantiated claims, as stated in the committee's report.

Reacting to the government's position, Prof. Odinkalu dismissed the committee's report as "an amateur cover-up" and insisted that his allegations remained valid, in a statement posted on social media.

Odinkalu disclosed that he received WhatsApp messages on April 29 and May 1, purportedly from the Anambra State Attorney-General, requesting that he disclose the identities of his sources and the name of the security adviser allegedly involved, but questioned the credibility and procedure of the inquiry.

He argued that the messages failed to disclose the composition, legal authority, or terms of reference of the investigative panel, and that it was incongruous for an investigation to be run via WhatsApp.

Odinkalu also criticised the government for eventually naming Emeakayi publicly, claiming the exercise amounted to a "whitewash", and maintained that he stood by his allegations despite the committee's findings.
