Amusan kicks off campaign with second-place finish in 200m event in Jamaica

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, kicked off her 2026 campaign on a high note, claiming second place in the women’s 200m at Jamaica’s Velocity Fest.
nAmusan demonstrated her impressive track versatility by achieving a season-best time of 23.25 seconds, a performance that underscored her remarkable athletic range beyond her signature hurdles event.
nElaine Thompson-Herah, Jamaica’s sprint icon, took the top spot in the women’s 200m with a time of 22.61 seconds, while another Jamaican, Ackera Nugent, secured third place with a time of 23.35 seconds in a fiercely competitive field.
nThe outing marked a promising start to Amusan’s season as she continues to build momentum ahead of major international competitions, her first race since claiming silver at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
nOne of the key events on Amusan’s calendar this season is the Prefontaine Classic, where she will return to her specialty, the 100m hurdles, on July 4 in Eugene.
nThe Prefontaine Classic, part of the prestigious Diamond League series, will be held at Hayward Field and is expected to feature one of the strongest fields in the discipline this season, with athletes from around the world competing for top honors.
nAmusan, who holds the world record with a time of 12.12 seconds, is set to face off against a talented lineup of athletes, including reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.
nThe 28-year-old has a storied history of success in Eugene, having won her first world title and set the current world record at the venue during the 2022 World Championships, and later claiming the Diamond League final title there in 2023.
nOver the past decade, Amusan has established herself as a dominant force in the 100m hurdles, winning the Diamond League final for three consecutive seasons between 2021 and 2023, a testament to her enduring athletic prowess.
