Amusan hungry for more after African Champs gold

World record holder Tobi Amusan says she is still hungry for more success after winning her third continental title at the ongoing CAA Senior African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, The PUNCH reports.

Amusan claimed Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 championships in the women’s 100m hurdles, crossing the line ahead of Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller, while another Nigerian, Adaobi Tabugbo, finished third to win her first individual medal for the country.

Amusan’s latest title adds to her maiden triumph on home soil in 2018 and her victory in Mauritius in 2022.

She did not compete in the hurdles at the last edition in Cameroon in 2024.

On her return in Ghana, the 29-year-old began her season brightly and is already looking ahead to more success as she jets out to China for the opening leg of the 2026 Diamond League on Saturday.

“Beyond grateful to God, my team, supporters, and everyone who continues to believe in me through every season. Historic feeling. Still hungry for more. The mission continues,” the athlete wrote on X after her victory.

After her outing in Ghana, the 29-year-old has now switched focus to the Shanghai/Keqiao meeting, where she will line up in a stacked women’s 100m hurdles field featuring some of the biggest names in global athletics.

Amusan, whose world record of 12.12s remains the fastest time ever run in the event, will face reigning world champion Ditaji Kambundji, Olympic champion Masai Russell, Jamaican world champion Danielle Williams and Bahamian sprint hurdler Devynne Charlton.

The race will also include Ackera Nugent, Tonea Marshall, Megan Simmonds and China’s Wu Yanni.

Amusan and Russell remain the two fastest women in history over the distance with personal bests of 12.12s and 12.17s respectively, while Kambundji ran a Swiss record 12.24s to win the world title in Tokyo last year.

The Shanghai/Keqiao meeting will officially open the 2026 Diamond League season, which concludes with the two-day final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.

Other women’s headline stars expected at the meeting include Kenyan middle-distance icon Faith Kipyegon, Jamaican sprint stars Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson, Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Bahraini quarter-miler Salwa Eid Naser.
