Amosun mourns ex-PDP national chairman Bamanga Tukur

Former Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, has described the death of elder statesman and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Bamanga Tukur, as one of the nation’s finest citizens adding that his passing as a “great loss to Nigeria.”

Tukur died on Saturday, barely three days before his 91st birthday.

In his condolence message on Sunday, Amosun said Tukur’s long and distinguished life was marked by significant contributions to public service, politics, governance, business and national development.

He said Tukur’s legacy stretched well beyond his political career, recalling his pioneering role in Nigeria’s maritime sector after his appointment in 1975 as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority.

According to Amosun, Tukur also played pivotal roles in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Business Roundtable, contributing to efforts aimed at strengthening African economic cooperation and private-sector development.

The former governor further highlighted Tukur’s political journey, which saw him serve as civilian Governor of old Gongola State, now Adamawa State, in 1983; Minister of Industry between 1993 and 1995; and National Chairman of the PDP from 2012 to 2014.

Amosun said the late politician’s influence was felt across generations and borders.

He said, “Our nation’s political landscape has been greatly enriched by the life and contributions of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

n

“He distinguished himself through decades of service to Adamawa State, the Northern Region, Nigeria, and the African continent.”

Amosun noted that Tukur’s contributions had been recognised with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger and the traditional chieftaincy title of Tafidan Adamawa.

He described the honours as “enduring recognitions of his immense contributions to the nation and his community.”

The former governor extended his condolences to the Tukur family, the government and people of Adamawa State, as well as the late statesman’s business and political associates, friends and admirers.

He also prayed that Allah grants Tukur Aljannah Firdaus and gives his children, grandchildren, political associates and the entire family the strength to bear what he described as an “irreparable loss.”
