American Embassy praises Nigerian physician for groundbreaking kidney treatment breakthrough

The United States Mission in Nigeria has praised Dr Ikenna Okezie, a Nigerian-American physician and entrepreneur, for his role in revolutionizing kidney care and increasing access to high-quality healthcare in the US.

According to a post on the mission's X handle on Friday, Okezie is the CEO and co-founder of Somatus, a company that offers in-home dialysis support for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease.

The post highlighted Okezie's achievements, stating that his innovative approach and dedication to expanding access to quality healthcare have improved lives and transformed care delivery across the US.

Dr Okezie was born in Nigeria, but relocated to the US at the age of two and was raised in Detroit, where his physician father and elder brother inspired his interest in medicine.

Okezie graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and later earned a dual Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration from Harvard, specializing in finance and entrepreneurship.

Prior to founding Somatus, Okezie worked as Group Vice President at DaVita Inc, overseeing a $1bn business unit with over 4,000 employees and 600 contracted nephrologists in the Mid-Atlantic region.

His previous experience also includes roles as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company and a Managing Director at the Advisory Board Company.

Somatus, co-founded by Okezie and Anthony Welters, is a value-based care company that collaborates with healthcare groups and systems to provide integrated care for patients with kidney disease and congestive heart failure.

Valued at approximately $2.5bn, Somatus has become a leading innovator in specialized healthcare management, reflecting the US healthcare industry's shift towards value-based care.
