America withdraws top Brazilian diplomat's travel permit amidst escalating tensions

A State Department official revealed on Tuesday that the United States has revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador to Washington, marking the latest development in the diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

The decision was made in response to Brasilia's delay in approving a new US ambassador, with the US official stating that the Brazilian government owes a prompt and positive response to the request.

The revocation of the visa does not signify the expulsion of Brazil's envoy from the United States, as clarified by the official, who explained that the cancellation of a senior diplomat's visa is distinct from being removed from the country.

The official, speaking anonymously, emphasized the distinction, saying the visa revocation and expulsion are not the same, and the diplomat in question is not being forced to leave the country.

The current diplomatic row follows Brazil's denial of visas to two US officials who sought to meet with election authorities last month, with a Brazilian diplomatic source citing concerns over potential "political exploitation" as the reason for the denial.

A US State Department spokesperson had stated at the time that the two officials intended to discuss "election integrity, religious freedom and freedom of expression" with government officials, religious leaders, and others during their visit to Brasilia.

The spokesperson also dismissed any suggestion that the visit was an attempt to undermine Brazil's democratic election as a "baseless lie", emphasizing the legitimacy of the US officials' intentions.

The visa denial occurred after right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro renewed unfounded claims about the insecurity of Brazil's electronic voting system, while US President Donald Trump continues to falsely assert that widespread fraud led to his 2020 electoral loss.
