Again, Bremen coach questions Boniface fitness

Victor Boniface faces an uncertain role at Werder Bremen after head coach Daniel Thioune again raised concerns over the striker’s fitness and suitability for the team’s current tactical demands, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian forward, who is on loan from Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season, has endured a disrupted campaign due to injury, including a knee problem that kept him out for an extended period.

Although he recently returned to the matchday squad, he remained an unused substitute in Bremen’s 1-1 draw with VfB Stuttgart.

Thioune indicated that Boniface’s physical condition remains a key concern, with him favouring players who can deliver intensity and pace, particularly in the closing stages of matches.

Explaining his decision-making, Thioune said discussions had been held with Boniface regarding his condition, with the coaching staff identifying a gap between the player’s current fitness levels and the team’s immediate needs.

“We talked about it openly from day one and then also realised that a certain fitness deficit is simply present,” he said according to Kicker.

He added that while the situation may not favour the present, the club is prioritising decisions that will benefit long-term development, noting that Boniface’s commitment has not been in doubt.

“Whether it is conducive to the present, I do not know, but we’re making a decision that will be beneficial for the future,” he added.

“And there is Boniface that is at least committed. Alone: It is also about his own career.”

Thioune also outlined the profile of striker currently preferred by the team.

“Our current preferred profile is a striker that is present, and strong player in the box. Others have to accept that, even if Victor doesn’t necessarily agree with it,” he said.

Boniface has not featured in a competitive match since December and now faces a difficult path back into contention, with Musah impressing in recent appearances and offering greater physical sharpness.

The 20-year-old was introduced at half-time in Bremen’s defeat to Augsburg, where he provided renewed attacking presence and energy.

With his loan spell nearing its end and Bremen prioritising players who are part of their long-term plans, Boniface could struggle for further opportunities before the season concludes.

The forward will now be expected to prove his fitness in training as the club continues its push to secure Bundesliga safety with two games to go.
