Adeleke’s campaign council demands suspect’s arrest in failed APC DG assassination

The Imole Campaign Council, the group leading the re-election campaign of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Saturday challenged the State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to make public more details regarding the confession of one Olamilekan Oriyomi, arrested for attempting to kill the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council, Mr. Wole Oke.

The council in a statement signed by the Chairman of its Media Committee, Bamidele Salam, specifically demanded the video recording of Oriyomi’s parade before journalists.

“This challenge has become imperative in view of very credible intelligence available to our Campaign Council suggesting that the narrative being forcefully pushed by the Osun State Police Command is riddled with disturbing inconsistencies which deserve urgent public scrutiny.

“If the Osun State Police Command has absolutely nothing to hide, Mr Ibrahim Gotan should have no difficulty whatsoever releasing the complete and unedited video footage of that press briefing, just as we have with some recently arrested suspects of political violence, for Nigerians, members of the media, civil society organisations and independent observers to examine,” the statement read.

The group warned that concealing portions of the briefing may lead to suspicion that the Police Command was hiding some facts about the incident from the public.

It further said, “If the CP refuses to meet the demand of the council, we call on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, to immediately constitute an independent investigative team to probe the matter.”

As of the time of filing this report, Osun Police Command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, has not responded to the statement sent to him via WhatsApp, and he could not be reached through his mobile line.

The State Police Command on Thursday paraded a Disc Jockey, Olalekan Oriyomi and two others over an attempt to assassinate the Director General of the Osun APC Campaign Council, Mr Oluwole Oke, at Ipetu Ijesa.

Others paraded with Oriyomi include Ayotunde Ikupolati, aged 44 and Femi Fakinleye, 31, while an English Beretta pistol loaded with four live rounds of ammunition was also said to have been recovered from one of the suspects.

Stating the fact of the matter, Osun Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, explained that the suspects were arrested through an intelligence-led operation before they could carry out the assassination.
