ADC chieftain urges Wike to caution Kuje council chair over remarks

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Okai Austin, has urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to caution the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Samuel Shekwolo, over comments he described as divisive and capable of heightening political tensions in the area.

Okai, a human rights activist, made the call in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, following a viral video in which the council chairman was allegedly heard threatening to track down and attack critics on social media.

Shekwolo was also accused of warning residents who do not support the ruling APC to leave the area council.

Reacting to the remarks, Okai described them as “uncalled for” and highly dangerous, warning that such utterances could trigger violence if not promptly addressed by the relevant authorities.

“The Federal Capital Territory is home to all Nigerians, as well as the international community. We must not allow anyone to escalate tensions,” Okai said.

He urged the council chairman to exercise restraint and promote peace, tolerance and inclusiveness among residents, regardless of their political affiliations.

Okai said public officials, particularly those entrusted with leadership at the grassroots, should be mindful of their utterances and avoid statements capable of creating division within their communities.

“Being a local government chairman does not mean one should lack administrative civility. Kuje is known for peace and tolerance, and the leadership must reflect that,” he said.

The ADC chieftain further called on relevant authorities to review the comments attributed to Shekwolo and ensure that elected and appointed officials remain committed to maintaining peace and order.

He stressed that political differences should not be allowed to undermine peaceful coexistence among residents of the FCT.

Okai also urged Shekwolo to emulate political leaders known for peaceful engagement and dialogue, citing former FCT Senator Philip Aduda as an example.

He appealed to Wike and other relevant authorities to intervene before the situation escalates, stressing that responsible leadership requires restraint, tolerance and respect for divergent political views.
