Adams eager to take on Villarreal away from home

Despite Sevilla’s relegation battle in La Liga, Nigerian striker Akor Adams remains upbeat about the club’s chances of survival with three games left to play, beginning with Wednesday’s trip to Villarreal, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Adams came off the bench to score the winner in Sevilla’s 2-1 victory over Espanyol at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Sunday, taking his tally to nine goals this season.

Despite being the club’s top scorer this campaign, the 26-year-old appeared to have fallen out of favour with coach Luis Garcia, who relegated him to the bench in their previous two matches.

Before the clash against Manolo Gonzalez’s side, Adams had played only four minutes across Sevilla’s last two games.

However, the striker silenced his critics with the decisive goal on Sunday, lifting Sevilla above the relegation zone with three matches remaining.

Currently 13th in the table, Los Rojiblancos still need positive results in their remaining fixtures, starting with the trip to third-placed Villarreal, to avoid being dragged back into the relegation battle by teams below them, including Alaves.

“I’m very happy for the three points and for my teammates. We work hard, and we are very happy with the result,” Adams told Sevilla’s official website.

“We are focused on each game and on getting the three points. Now we will go to Villarreal and gradually keep taking steps towards achieving our target.

“I feel Sevilla in my heart and work every day for the club. This goal is very important because it helped us get the three points and make the fans happy.”

Adams’ late strike against Espanyol lifted Sevilla from 17th to 13th in La Liga, easing the pressure on the team ahead of the final stretch of the season.

“Sevilla is a very important club in the league and in the city.

The coach reminds us of this every day,” he said.

“The support from the fans in the last two matches has been incredible, and so has the work of my teammates — 90 minutes of running all over the pitch. These three points are very important for us, for the joy of the dressing room and of the city. It’s been incredible.”
