Abiodun heartbroken after season-ending injury

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has reacted to her latest injury setback writing “From World Cup heartbreak to this, 2026 must really be that year” in a Snapchat post.

The 22-year-old Nigerian international has been ruled out for the rest of the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League season after sustaining an injury this week.

Abiodun has been shifted from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury list following the latest setback.

She has appeared in nine matches this season for the Spirit, including four starts, and has played 320 minutes. The injury comes at a challenging time for the midfielder, who has had a mixed year with the Super Falcons.

Abiodun played four matches for Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations before they were stunned 3-2 by Cameroon in the Quarter-Finals.

She also played in the 2-1 loss to South Africa in the World Cup Qualifiers Play-off, which ended Nigeria’s hopes of hosting the premier women’s showpiece.

The player joined Washington Spirit in January 2025 and was on loan at Dallas Trinity before being recalled to the capital city side in August 2025.

She has made a total of 21 appearances for the Spirit, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

The injury is a setback for Washington Spirit, who are second in the NWSL standings with 43 points, just two points behind league leaders Gotham FC.

They will be looking to build on their second consecutive runners-up finish in the 2024 and 2025 campaigns as they chase down their first-ever title since winning it in 2021.
