Abia State Legislature Operates Independently of Government, According to Parliamentary Leader

Emmanuel Emeruwa, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has vehemently refuted allegations that the legislature is dominated by the executive branch of government, emphasizing instead that the two arms enjoy a collaborative and productive working relationship that benefits the state as a whole.

This assertion was made by Emeruwa on Tuesday in Umuahia, during the commemoration of the 8th Abia State House of Assembly's third anniversary, where he underscored the importance of a harmonious relationship between the legislative and executive arms.

According to Emeruwa, the Assembly has made a concerted effort to maintain a cordial relationship with the executive, recognizing that any discord would ultimately harm the state, and he emphasized that the relationship between the House and the Executive has been consistently amicable and peaceful.

Emeruwa explicitly disagreed with the notion that the Executive has undue influence over the State Assembly, stating that while disagreements may arise, they are always resolved in a peaceful and constructive manner.

The Speaker highlighted the numerous achievements of the 8th Assembly, noting that lawmakers have enacted a wide range of bills encompassing welfare, criminal justice, politics, and appropriation, effectively covering all aspects of governance.

Emeruwa observed that the Assembly has been prolific in its lawmaking, to the point where it may be necessary to pause and focus on implementing existing laws, given the vast array of legislation that has already been passed.

The Speaker noted that the 8th Assembly has made significant strides in lawmaking, with virtually every aspect of human life now being addressed through legislation, and he expressed satisfaction with the breadth and scope of the Assembly's accomplishments.

Emeruwa also disclosed plans to digitize the Assembly's operations, but acknowledged that funding remains a major obstacle to the successful implementation of this initiative.

Regarding constituency projects, the Speaker noted that while lawmakers have executed various projects across the state, their primary responsibility remains legislation, and he emphasized the importance of this core function.

Emeruwa expressed satisfaction with the increase in the number of Labour Party lawmakers in the House, which has grown from nine to 11 members, and he welcomed this development as a positive trend.

The Speaker commented on the killing of nursing student Wendy Achumba in Imo State, noting that members of the Assembly had visited the victim's family and expressed confidence that justice would be served in the case.

Emeruwa stated that with the suspects in custody, it is now up to the law to investigate and potentially bring them to justice, and he expressed his faith in the legal system's ability to deliver a just outcome.

Despite the Assembly's many accomplishments, Emeruwa acknowledged that there are still some goals that have yet to be achieved, and he candidly admitted that not everything the Assembly had set out to do has been realized.
