52-year-old man found dead inside Kwara well

A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, has been found dead inside a domestic well near Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The Kwara State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle, saying its personnel recovered Ayeni’s body from the well.

According to the statement, the Fire Service received a distress call concerning the incident and arrived at the scene at about 8:42am, before commencing a recovery operation.

The agency said, “Our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52.”

The circumstances surrounding how Ayeni ended up inside the well had yet to be established as of Tuesday.

The Fire Service, however, said information gathered at the scene indicated that children in the neighbourhood discovered the man inside the well and alerted elders in the area.

“According to information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity,” the statement added.

The agency said the well was located close to the deceased’s residence.

Following the recovery, the body was handed over to the police for further investigation.

“The body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action,” the Fire Service said.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to properly secure and cover domestic wells and other open water sources.

Muhammed also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children did not move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous areas.

The Fire Service commiserated with the deceased’s family and the community, while reiterating its commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the state.
