2027: Public inspection of candidates’ credentials begins Saturday in Lagos – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State has announced that it will commence the public display of candidates’ personal particulars for the 2027 presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives elections on Saturday, August 1, 2026.

The commission said the exercise is in line with the provisions of Section 29 of the Electoral Act 2022 and will allow members of the public to scrutinise the credentials and documents submitted by candidates seeking elective positions, Vanguard reports.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs Esther Emeh, on Friday.

INEC said the display would take place at the commission’s Lagos State office in Sabo-Yaba and the respective Local Government Area offices within the affected constituencies.

The commission explained that the documents, contained in Form EC9, include candidates’ credentials, personal information and affidavits submitted by political parties.

“Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties,” INEC stated.

The electoral body urged political parties, candidates, stakeholders and members of the public to take advantage of the exercise to inspect the documents during the display period.

INEC added that individuals with objections to the information provided by any candidate, including claims of false declarations or forged documents, could seek legal redress in accordance with the Electoral Act.

The commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability and the conduct of credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The public display of candidates’ particulars is a statutory requirement under Nigeria’s electoral framework, designed to give citizens and stakeholders an opportunity to scrutinise information submitted by political parties and their candidates before elections.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has continued preparations for the polls, including electoral activities such as candidate documentation, party nominations and voter-related processes.

Under Section 29 of the Electoral Act 2022, the commission is required to make candidates’ submitted information available for public inspection and allow objections to be raised where necessary.
