2027: Lagos youths mobilise for Tinubu, Hamzat

The youth caucus of the All Progressives Congress in Ikosi-Ketu/Isheri has launched what it said would be a sustained grassroots mobilisation campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and Dr Obafemi Hamzat’s governorship ambition.

Speaking to The PUNCH, one of the youth leaders in the area and the event’s sponsor, Alaba Shonaike, said the initiative was organised under the aegis of the Ikosi-Isheri Active Progressive Youths and began with a three-kilometre solidarity walk that attracted a large turnout of supporters from across the community.

“This is a grassroots movement. We are recognised but not sponsored by the party.

We have only come here to express our support and readiness to support the reelection of President Bola Tinubu in 2027 and the election of Dr Obafemi Hamzat here in Lagos State.

“The rally on Sunday is more like the first in a series of political engagement activities planned for the coming months ahead of the 2027 elections.

n

“And we are making a bold claim that President Tinubu has delivered significantly on his promise to Nigerians, and we should support his reelection for a second term,” Shonaike said.

The carnival-like procession, which took place on Sunday, began at Mile 12 Roundabout and moved through Ketu to CMD Road, attracting youths, political stakeholders and residents who marched in branded T-shirts and caps bearing the images of Tinubu and Hamzat.

Participants danced, sang solidarity songs and displayed campaign materials along the route.

The organisers said the massive turnout recorded at the march had reinforced their decision to sustain the mobilisation efforts through additional rallies, community engagements and grassroots outreach programmes in the months ahead.

Tinubu is seeking a second four-year term in office, while Hamzat, the current deputy governor of Lagos State, is the APC’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Speaking with journalists, IAPY spokesperson and filmmaker, Babaseun Fasheru, described the march as the beginning of a wider support campaign aimed at taking the message of the two leaders to more residents within and beyond the council area.

“This is only the first of several activities we have lined up. The response from residents today has been massive and encouraging.

“We intend to sustain the engagement through community outreach programmes, town hall interactions and other mobilisation activities in the coming months,” Fasheru said.

He added that the group was supporting Tinubu’s return to office based on what it described as the achievements of his administration since 2023, particularly the economic reforms.

“We are encouraged by the strides Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has made since becoming President in 2023. The bold and courageous steps he has taken to put the country back on the path of economic recovery are commendable.

“Our people may be experiencing hardship due to the reforms, but we believe it is temporary. In no time, we shall begin to see the rewards of this belt-tightening,” he said.

Other speakers, including Temitope Olaleye, Shodeinde Akeem Olakunle and Kareem Akeem, all leaders in the nascent support movement, said the march was a demonstration of confidence in the leadership record and capacity of both Tinubu and Hamzat.

“We, the youth of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, have come out en masse to support President Tinubu’s re-election and Dr Hamzat’s governorship bid. This is our way of saying we believe in their capacity to deliver,” they said.
