2027: Kebbi PDP Disavows Support for Governor Idris, Insists Party Remains Solidly United

The Kebbi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has disowned reports that it endorsed Governor Nasir Idris of the All Progressives Congress for the 2027 governorship election, insisting that the party remains united and committed to its candidates.

The party’s position followed a declaration by a group of PDP stakeholders and supporters in Birnin Kebbi in support of Idris’ re-election bid.

The group, led by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd.), and other prominent political figures, said it resolved to back the governor based on his performance and commitment to the development of the state.

However, in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the PDP State Chairman, Alhaji Usman Suru, said the declaration did not represent the position of the party.

“The Kebbi State PDP denies and rejects the rumour that it is supporting the APC and the APC governorship candidate in Kebbi State in the upcoming 2027 election,” Suru said.

He described the PDP as “one and united”, adding that the party remained committed to its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Suru urged party members and supporters to disregard reports suggesting that the PDP had abandoned its political platform or adopted the APC candidate.

“I advise PDP members to focus on uniting the people and disregard all false and baseless rumours being spread by those who want to cause confusion. Such people have no control over the PDP in Kebbi State”, he said.

The chairman said the party had candidates for the state House of Assembly in all 21 local government areas, the House of Representatives in all eight federal constituencies and the Senate in the three senatorial districts.

He added that the party also had a governorship candidate, stressing that the PDP remained an independent and fully established political organisation in the state.

Meanwhile, speaking at the gathering where support for Governor Idris was declared, Bamaiyi said the group’s decision was based on what he described as the governor’s visible achievements and commitment to infrastructural development.

“For the 2027 elections, we are now fully committed to the victory of Governor Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu,” Bamaiyi said.

He, however, clarified that the group would remain within the PDP, indicating that the endorsement was a decision by the participating stakeholders and not an official resolution of the state chapter.

Also speaking, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Buhari Bala, said the group’s decision followed its assessment of the governor’s performance and leadership.

“We cannot remain passive in the face of what we consider patriotic and selfless leadership,” Bala said.

The development comes amid increasing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi, with a group of PDP stakeholders backing the incumbent governor while the state party leadership insists that the PDP has neither endorsed Idris nor abandoned its own candidate.
