Aguiyi-Ironsi’s legacy remains vital to Nigeria’s unity – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Nigeria’s first military leader, late Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, saying his leadership at a critical period in the country’s history helped preserve national unity.

Tinubu stated this on Wednesday in Umuahia, Abia State, during the 60th anniversary ceremony marking the death of Aguiyi-Ironsi, who became Nigeria’s first military Head of State.

n

Represented at the event by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, the President described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a leader who placed national interest above personal considerations.

n

“He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, and throughout his career, he placed the interests of the nation above personal consideration,” Tinubu said.

n

The president noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed leadership at a time Nigeria was facing serious political uncertainty and national tension.

n

“His assumption of leadership came at a time when Nigeria faced immense political uncertainty and national anxiety,” he said.

Tinubu acknowledged that although Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tenure was brief, he remained committed to preserving Nigeria’s unity, restoring stability and protecting the integrity of the Nigerian state.

n

“Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state. It can be imagined that without him, probably Nigeria would not be standing here today,” the President said.

He added that the values associated with Aguiyi-Ironsi, including patriotism, discipline, integrity, selfless service and national unity, remain relevant in contemporary Nigeria.

“As we reflect on his legacy today, we are reminded that nation building is a continuous responsibility that transcends generations,” Tinubu said.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who also attended the ceremony, described January 15 as one of the darkest days in Nigeria’s history, urging citizens to learn positive lessons from past challenges.

n

“There are many black days in the history of Nigeria. 15th January is one black day in the history of Nigeria,” Obasanjo said.

n

He, however, stressed that such moments should inspire Nigerians towards inclusion, cooperation and nation building rather than division.

n

“Most of the black days, what did they do? They excluded, they destroyed, they separated, and it’s not good for us. But we can learn the right lesson and draw inspiration for inclusion, for construction, for cooperation, and for bringing together,” he said.

Obasanjo described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a pioneer in the Nigerian military, noting that he rose through the ranks to become the country’s first captain, major, lieutenant colonel, brigadier and major general.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who hosted the event, said Aguiyi-Ironsi died at the age of 42, adding that mistakes made at such an early stage of leadership could be understood within the context of the circumstances of the time.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said he was only 10 years old when the events that led to the gathering occurred, expressing happiness that Nigeria continues to recognise leaders who believed in the country.

Representing the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, Engr. Imo John Onwugbule Aguiyi-Ironsi said the family gathered not only to mourn but also to honour the late military leader’s contribution to Nigeria.

n

“60 years ago, Nigeria lost a patriot and detribalised Nigerian leader. We are gathered here not to only mourn, but to remember, to honour and rededicate ourselves to Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the legacy of a person who lived for the good of society continues through the memories and values left behind.

The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths at Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tomb in remembrance of the former military leader.
