Yobe University clarifies image of pupils camping outside that went viral

The Yobe State University management has come forward to address a viral photo showing students sleeping outdoors, attributing the situation to a temporary shortage of accommodation due to ongoing renovation and upgrade of hostels, with most of the facilities currently under construction.

This explanation was provided by Hon. Yusuf Ali, the Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications to Governor Mai Mala Buni, in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

The university management emphasized that the viral image, although authentic, does not represent a widespread accommodation crisis, but rather a temporary situation resulting from the renovation and upgrade projects across the campus.

According to the management, several hostels are undergoing comprehensive refurbishment as part of efforts to improve students' living conditions, leading to a temporary reduction in available bed spaces.

The current heat season has also contributed to some students opting to stay outdoors at night for comfort, further exacerbating the situation.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, has confirmed that hostel allocations are ongoing, with deliberate steps being taken to ensure that affected students are accommodated as quickly as possible.

Measures are also being implemented to decongest hostels, particularly high-demand facilities such as the Abuja Hostel, to alleviate the accommodation shortage.

The university management has reassured students, parents, and the general public that the situation is under control and is being actively addressed, with no student abandoned and every effort being made to ensure safe and adequate accommodation for all.
