World Igbo Congress plans Washington D.C. rally over insecurity in Nigeria

The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced plans to hold a mass rally in Washington, D.C., aimed at drawing international attention to rising insecurity in Nigeria, including killings and kidnappings reported in several communities.

In a statement made available to Vanguard on Wednesday, the organisation said it has mandated its Vice Chairman, Basil Onwukwe, to lead a delegation to the United States capital for the event.

The rally is being organised in collaboration with the Save Nigeria advocacy group led by Stephen Osemweigie.

According to the organisers, the event is intended to raise awareness of security challenges affecting communities in Nigeria and to advocate for stronger responses to ongoing violence and criminality.

They also said the programme will include discussions on insecurity and an awards ceremony recognising members of the U.S. Congress who have contributed to raising awareness of Nigeria’s security situation.

The rally is scheduled to hold from June 20 to June 23, 2026, beginning daily at 10:00 a.m.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Onwukwe said the WIC remains committed to drawing attention to insecurity issues and supporting efforts aimed at improving safety in affected communities.

He also expressed concern about Nigeria’s security framework and called for broader scrutiny of the country’s approach to addressing violent crime.

Onwukwe urged members of the Nigerian diaspora to support advocacy efforts and continue engaging international stakeholders on issues affecting security in Nigeria.

The World Igbo Congress said it hopes the planned Washington event will encourage greater global attention and action toward addressing insecurity in the country.
