England manager Thomas Tuchel has a performance clause in his contract despite recently signing a new deal that will keep him in charge until Euro 2028, the Football Association has confirmed.

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham disclosed the details while defending the decision to extend Tuchel’s contract before the outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is known.

According to BBC Sport, Bullingham said performance-related conditions are included in all FA contracts but declined to reveal the specific terms in Tuchel’s agreement.

“There’s performance clauses in every single contract at the FA, but I’m not going into any detail of what they are,” Bullingham said.

The FA chief also rejected suggestions that extending Tuchel’s contract before the World Cup was a gamble, insisting the governing body wanted to secure the services of a manager it considers among the best in the game.

“The reality is he’s a top-level manager who would be in demand and we knew we had someone who was doing a really good job. We can’t just expect someone to wait around and just leave it and see how you go,” he said.

Bullingham added that the FA was keen to avoid uncertainty over the manager’s future overshadowing England’s World Cup campaign, while also planning ahead for Euro 2028, which will be staged on home soil.

The 52-year-old former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss was appointed with a mandate to deliver England’s first World Cup title since 1966. His side will begin their campaign against Croatia as the Three Lions attempt to end nearly six decades of hurt on football’s biggest stage.
