WHX makes a comeback in Lagos amid a healthcare funding boom sweeping West Africa

West Africa's healthcare sector is witnessing a significant resurgence, driven by increased investment, policy reforms, and burgeoning regional trade opportunities, with the impending return of the World Health Expo Lagos 2026 poised to foster new partnerships and accelerate growth.

Nigeria, the largest healthcare market in the region, is at the epicentre of this transformation, with industry projections indicating a 7.1 percent expansion by 2027, resulting in an estimated value of 161.7 million dollars.

A substantial 1.2 billion dollar federal government investment, targeting infrastructure upgrades and workforce development, is driving this growth, complemented by major oncology and diagnostic expansions led by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority.

Meanwhile, regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area is facilitating the movement of medical goods and services, creating new avenues for imports, partnerships, and scale.

However, these opportunities coexist with persistent challenges, including the fact that an estimated 70 percent of Nigerians still fund healthcare out of pocket, highlighting gaps in financial protection and access.

Nigeria's rapidly growing and youthful population, projected to reach 250 million, is exacerbating pressure on both primary and specialist care, with similar trends unfolding across West Africa.

The country's medical device market remains the largest in the subregion, with projected growth from 414.8 million dollars in 2025 to over 632 million dollars by 2030, while other countries, including Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast, are also experiencing steady expansion.

Against this backdrop, the World Health Expo returns to the Landmark Centre from June 2 to 4, bringing together over 500 exhibitors, more than 8,000 professional visitors from 40 countries, and dozens of global health leaders.

According to stakeholders, the event is more than a showcase, serving as a platform for shaping the future of healthcare delivery in the region, with the President of the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria, Njide Ndili, emphasizing the importance of market access dialogue and regional trade.

Njide Ndili noted that "leadership lies at the heart of healthcare transformation" and that "the shift from care to capability is key to the long-term success of healthcare institutions," highlighting the need to scale efforts and utilize the WHX platform to connect stakeholders and share best practices.

This year's edition of the World Health Expo features a trade-focused agenda, with leadership forums designed to deliver practical outcomes, focusing on market access, regulatory alignment, investment, and diagnostics.

The Healthcare Market Access and Policy Leadership Forum will explore regulatory harmonisation and AfCFTA opportunities, while a hospital investment forum will examine financing and procurement strategies, and a dedicated laboratory forum will focus on advancing diagnostics capacity.

Tom Coleman, Portfolio Director for Healthcare at Informa Markets, stated that "WHX is more than dialogue, it is where policy ambition becomes impactful collaboration," emphasizing the event's role in driving investment in infrastructure, technology, and healthcare services.

The exhibition floor will feature cutting-edge medical technologies, an integrated laboratory zone with live demonstrations, and dedicated spaces for networking and deal-making, all designed to translate conversations into concrete business outcomes.
