West African regional court unveils ambitious roadmap 'Justice 2030' initiative

The ECOWAS Court of Justice is set to unveil its Strategic Plan 2026–2030, dubbed “Justice 2030,” on May 27, as a means to fortify justice delivery and uphold the rule of law across the sub-region.

This new strategic framework marks a significant milestone in bolstering human rights protection and enhancing access to justice within the ECOWAS Community, according to the court.

A comprehensive roadmap for the court's operations is outlined in the five-year plan, with primary focus areas including improved judicial efficiency, expanded access to justice for citizens, and strengthened regional legal harmonisation.

The plan also seeks to augment institutional capacity, foster transparency, and intensify engagement with stakeholders, thereby ensuring the court remains effective in its mandate.

Emerging challenges confronting regional justice systems, such as rising case volumes, complex human rights litigation, and the imperative for digital transformation in judicial processes, will be addressed through the plan.

The launch event, scheduled for May 27, will convene heads of ECOWAS institutions and partner organisations, providing a forum for discussion on bolstering cooperation and mobilising support for the plan's implementation.

The court has reiterated its commitment to delivering justice that is timely, impartial, and accessible, while reaffirming its role in safeguarding the rule of law and human rights in the region.

The “Justice 2030” initiative embodies the court's resolve to build upon past accomplishments and respond effectively to the evolving justice needs of the ECOWAS Community.
