We inherited over N14trn debt, 2,068 road projects — Umahi

Abakaliki – The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has disclosed that the current administration inherited road project debts exceeding N14 trillion, alongside 2,068 ongoing projects as of May 2023.

Umahi made the revelation on Monday while inspecting ongoing works along the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, noting that despite the challenges, the administration has continued to push ahead with infrastructure development across the country.

He said the government has made significant progress in addressing road infrastructure deficits, adding that several key projects are nearing completion.

According to him, the Ekeobinagu Flyover in Enugu is about 99 percent completed and is scheduled for commissioning in May. He described the project as a major intervention aimed at eliminating long-standing traffic congestion in the area.

“We used to spend hours in traffic at that location, but with the progress of work, the situation has improved significantly. The flyover is a major project and a testament to the capacity of indigenous contractors,” he said.

On the ongoing flyover project at the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army/Abakpa junction, Umahi stated that the contractor has completed 15 piles, with additional work ongoing out of a total of 40 piles required for the project.

The minister acknowledged funding challenges affecting some projects, noting that contractors are yet to receive payments in certain cases. However, he said the President has directed that funds be released to accelerate work.

“I will not blame the contractors for the pace of work because timely payment is crucial. Once payments are made, we expect work to progress more rapidly,” he said.

Umahi emphasised that the administration remains committed to improving road infrastructure nationwide, despite financial constraints.

He added that efforts are being made to ensure better connectivity across all regions, expressing optimism that the ongoing projects would significantly reduce travel challenges faced by Nigerians.

“Not every project can be completed overnight, but we are focused and committed to delivering quality roads and bridges across the country,” he stated.
