Vinícius Júnior has downplayed Brazil’s chances ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging caution despite the growing expectations surrounding the team.

The Real Madrid winger, in a press conference ahead of the friendly versus France tomorrow, stressed that the focus within the squad remains on preparation and performance, not on external labels or predictions.

“We are not the favourites to win the World Cup,” Vinicius said, insisting that Brazil must earn their status on the pitch rather than rely on reputation.

The 25-year-old also addressed speculation about his club future, reaffirming his desire to remain at Real Madrid despite ongoing contract talks. His current deal runs until 2027, and discussions over an extension are yet to be finalised.

Vinicius’ situation at Madrid has seen a more positive turn in recent months, especially following managerial changes involving Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, with the Brazilian now regaining top form and playing a key role in the team’s resurgence.

On the international front, he also spoke about working under Carlo Ancelotti, highlighting the coach’s collaborative approach and influence on the squad.

“The coach always talks to the players. He asks us about the position we want to play, how we prefer to defend, but the final decision is his. This conversation is important for us because we always learn from him,” he said.

Looking ahead, Vinicius acknowledged the expectations on him as a central figure in the team but emphasised the collective strength of the squad, pointing to emerging and established talents ready to make an impact.

“I imagine everyone wants me to be one of the key players. I’m ready for all the challenges in my career. I’ve already played in a World Cup and I don’t want to lose again.

“I’ve been working hard at home; I don’t want to get injured. There’s Raphinha, Joao Pedro. The young players coming up, Endrick, Estevao. We’re all ready. We can also decide a match with a set piece. That’s how you win a World Cup.”

Brazil will face France in a high-profile friendly, a match that could see him come up against club teammates, including Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni.
