Victims of Epstein's abuse take legal action against American authorities for exposing their names

A lawsuit has been filed against the US government and Google by survivors of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following the accidental revelation of victims' identities in a vast collection of documents published online by the Justice Department on Thursday.

The Justice Department had released over three million files in January pertaining to the investigation into Epstein, including his connections to prominent figures, but inadvertently left the names of around 100 victims unredacted despite being supposed to be anonymized.

As a result, the victims' private information was made publicly available, and the DOJ subsequently acknowledged that this disclosure was a violation of the survivors' rights, prompting the withdrawal of the information.

However, online entities such as Google have continued to republish the sensitive information, ignoring pleas from victims to remove it, and even displaying their personal details in search results and AI-generated content.

A review of the files by New York Times journalists uncovered dozens of nude photographs, some of which included identifiable faces, further exacerbating the situation.

Epstein had been convicted in 2008 of soliciting sex from minors as young as 14, but his death in a New York jail cell in 2019 occurred before he could face trial on sex trafficking charges.

The lawsuit claims that the government's actions have caused renewed trauma for the survivors, who are now being subjected to threatening calls, emails, and accusations of conspiring with Epstein, despite being his victims.

The case filing alleges that the government breached the Privacy Act of 1974, while Google is accused of violating California laws related to invasion of privacy, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and unlawful business practices.
