Vanguard Awards: Nwobodo, Bucknor-Akerele Urge Enhanced Democratic Governance in Run-Up to 2027

Former Governor of old Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo, made a grand entrance, arriving in style, as he was set to be honoured at the 2025 Vanguard Man of the Year Awards.

He was joined by fellow awardee, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, as they were recognised for their selfless contributions to the nation, alongside other lifetime achievement awardees.

Nwobodo and Bucknor-Akerele took the opportunity to share their thoughts on leadership, democracy, and the future of Nigeria, offering valuable insights and reflections.

Nwobodo, who referred to himself as Director of the institute, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, noting that it was a rare honour to be acknowledged years after leaving public office.

He stated, "You get awarded when you are in power, now, out of power, you will be remembered," as he thanked the organisers for the honour extended to him, his family, and his state.

Nwobodo emphasised the importance of integrity in public service, highlighting honesty and courage in telling the truth as key virtues worthy of recognition.

He also expressed optimism about the nation's future, stating that the country would emerge stronger with committed leadership, a sentiment that resonated with the audience.

Bucknor-Akerele, on the other hand, was taken aback by the honour, describing it as a significant moment in her public life, and used the platform to raise concerns about the state of Nigeria's democracy.

She insisted that the struggle to entrench good governance was ongoing, saying, "The struggle still continues, we're still fighting to make sure that our democracy remains strong."

Bucknor-Akerele lamented the lack of progress in advancing women's political participation, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing financial barriers imposed by political parties as a major limitation.

She noted that the high fees required by political parties favoured "moneybags" over individuals who genuinely wanted to serve, saying, "They keep saying women will have special recognition, but we have not seen it."

Ahead of the 2027 elections, Bucknor-Akerele urged Nigerians to vote for leaders who were responsive to the needs of the masses, saying, "People should come out and vote for a government that truly cares for the people."

The event, which brought together dignitaries and stakeholders from across the country, served as a platform to celebrate leadership while reinforcing calls for accountability, inclusiveness, and democratic consolidation ahead of 2027.
