The United States has outlined eight important steps and opportunities available to immigrants after they become naturalised American citizens.

The guidance, published by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, highlights practical actions new citizens can take, including applying for a US passport, sponsoring eligible family members and registering to vote.

Apply for a US passport

n

New American citizens can apply for a US passport through the US Department of State. The passport provides official proof of citizenship, alongside the Certificate of Naturalisation.

Update Social Security records

n

New citizens are advised to contact the Social Security Administration and update their records to reflect their new citizenship status.

Sponsor eligible family members

n

Naturalised citizens can petition for certain family members to obtain lawful permanent residence, commonly known as a Green Card. Applicants must meet the relevant sponsorship and financial requirements.

Obtain citizenship documents for children

n

Some children may automatically acquire US citizenship when their parent becomes a naturalised citizen. Eligible parents can apply for a Certificate of Citizenship to document their child’s status.

Register to vote

Citizens can register to vote through the appropriate state or federal registration channels. USCIS lists voter registration as both a right and a responsibility of American citizenship.

Replace a lost Certificate of Naturalisation

Citizens who have lost or damaged their Certificate of Naturalisation can apply for a replacement by filing Form N-565 with USCIS.

Update driver’s licence records

New citizens who have changed their name or address can update their driver’s licence or state identification records with their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

New Americans can also explore entrepreneurship support available through the US Small Business Administration, including business counselling, access to capital and contracting opportunities.
