US authorities detain Nigerian national following fatal gunfire incident that claims lives of two female victims

Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a Nigerian man, is currently being held in custody and is facing multiple murder charges following a referral of his case to superior court by a DeKalb County magistrate judge on Tuesday, after a series of shootings occurred on Monday.

Abel has been charged with two counts of murder, along with charges of aggravated assault and weapon possession, and his case was referred to superior court after his defense team waived a formal reading of the warrants during a court appearance on Tuesday.

The shootings took place at three separate locations: a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road in DeKalb County, a Kroger store at Cherokee Plaza in Brookhaven, and along Battle Forest Drive in DeKalb County, according to police.

Investigators were able to link Abel to the attacks by analyzing rental vehicle data, which led to his arrest in Troup County, and while the attacks may have been random, police have not yet identified a specific motive for the shooting spree.

Abel's case is still being investigated, with police continuing to process evidence to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the crimes, and it is currently unclear when his next court appearance in superior court will be scheduled.

Abel has a prior record, with Brookhaven police noting that he was previously arrested and convicted of a felony in California in 2024, and he was also arrested by Savannah police last year.

Following his arrest in Savannah, Abel pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor charges of sexual battery, and was subsequently sentenced to 48 months of probation, banned from Savannah for four years, and ordered to undergo a psychosexual social evaluation, as stated in Chatham County court documents.

According to court documents from Chatham County, Abel is a U.S. citizen, and police officials have emphasized their commitment to the victims' families and public safety in the wake of the shootings.

A police official stated that "Our detectives are still going through evidence and still processing everything that we have so far," and added that "We're continuing to work to fully understand the circumstances and the motive that led to these crimes," as quoted by Fox5.

The official also offered a message of reassurance, saying "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," and "we again want to reassure the community that there's no ongoing threat related to this suspect as he is in custody."
