Uruguay Appoint Former Star Diego Forlan as National Team Manager

The Uruguayan Football Association made the announcement on Sunday, marking the beginning of a new era for the national team after a campaign that failed to meet expectations, with Forlan, 47, taking the reins at a challenging time.

Uruguay's World Cup performance was one of its worst in recent history, with the team finishing third in its group with just two points, behind Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia, and failing to advance to the knockout stages.

The underwhelming campaign led to the end of Bielsa's tenure, with the Argentine coach stepping down shortly after the tournament concluded, paving the way for Forlan's appointment.

The Uruguayan Football Association stated that Forlan's initial contract will run until March 2027, after which his performance will be reviewed to determine whether to extend his stay or appoint a permanent head coach for the next World Cup cycle.
