University of California puts 19 pupils on hold amid claims of cheating on tests

The University of Calabar, also known as UniCal, has taken disciplinary action against 19 students, suspending them due to alleged examination misconduct, as recommended by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

This decision is outlined in a letter signed by Dr Citizen Ekpo, Director of Administration, on behalf of the Institution’s Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha, which was made available on Tuesday in Calabar.

According to Mr Effiong Eyo, Head of the Public Relations Unit, the suspension letter was issued after the university’s senate approved the committee’s recommendations, leading to the disciplinary action against the students.

The affected students will be suspended for one academic session, specifically the 2025/2026 session, and are expected to resume their studies in the 2026/2027 academic session, as stated by the university.

The suspension affects students from various faculties, including Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, and Allied Medical Sciences, among others.

Additional faculties with affected students include Pharmacy, Environmental Sciences, Nursing Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management, Marketing, and related departments, as confirmed by Eyo.

The university has instructed all deans, Heads of Departments, and relevant units to enforce the suspension and ensure full compliance with the directive, as announced by the spokesman.
