University of Abuja launches country's pioneering artificial intelligence-driven scholarly research platform

The University of Abuja has launched Nigeria's first Artificial Intelligence-powered academic research ecosystem, known as 'Thesis-SpeedWrite', which is designed to support structured thesis, dissertation, and scholarly writing. This platform is intended to guide students, researchers, and academics through the various stages of scholarly work, from topic development and literature review to data analysis, citation management, and final manuscript preparation.

Developed by Professor Isaiah Ilo of the Department of Theatre Arts, the AI-powered ecosystem aims to improve the quality of academic research while promoting originality, academic integrity, and adherence to global scholarly standards. The platform seeks to address the challenges associated with research writing, providing a structured approach to academic work.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, acknowledged the impact of AI on academic culture, stating that universities must embrace innovation while safeguarding the core values of scholarship and academic integrity. He noted that the emergence of AI has presented both opportunities and challenges for higher education institutions.

Prof. Fawehinmi described Thesis-SpeedWrite as a timely intervention that aligns with the university's commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and research, and emphasized that the platform is not designed to replace critical thinking or the role of supervisors. Instead, it is intended to serve as a responsible academic companion that helps researchers navigate the complexities of scholarly writing.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of tools that can help reduce the conviction many students experience in research writing, noting that many students struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack structure. He emphasized that a system that helps to verify the research process can become a meaningful support for academic development.

Prof. Fawehinmi commended the developer of the platform, Prof. Ilo, for pioneering an innovation that has the potential to redefine research writing in Nigeria and beyond. He expressed confidence that the ecosystem would assist students and researchers in producing high-quality academic work while reducing common challenges associated with thesis and dissertation writing.

In his keynote address, the Secretary, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Gwa Mohammed, stated that Africa has an opportunity to be at the centre stage of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driven by AI. He underscored the importance of AI in driving this revolution, highlighting Africa's opportunity to lead in adopting and adapting AI technologies.

Mohammed stressed the need for ethical use of AI, transparency, and responsibility, noting the potential harm that can result if AI is not used responsibly. He praised the human interface introduced by the platform, which enhances user experience by making the research process more intuitive, interactive, and accessible.

According to Mohammed, the platform's ability to allow lecturers or supervisors to see the level of decision-making by students using the tool is critical and should be supported. He emphasized the need for universities to move from merely adapting to global technological change to participating actively in shaping it.

Mohammed noted that the emergence of the platform from within the university and research community is significant, as sustainable transformation in education is often strongest when scholars themselves identify the problems and participate in crafting the solutions. He expressed encouragement that the platform has emerged from within the university.

Earlier, the Founder of the platform, Prof. Isaiah Ilo, stated that Thesis-SpeedWrite was developed in response to the global struggles faced by researchers and students in navigating the complexities of academic writing. He noted that the platform is built around a guided academic workflow, designed to help researchers move carefully from topic selection and project planning to literature organisation, guided reading, chapter development, drafting, revision, and defence preparation.

Prof. Ilo emphasized that the platform was created to address long-standing problems in research writing and supervision, especially the confusion, inconsistency, weak methodological alignment, and poor literature handling that many undergraduate and postgraduate researchers experience. He stated that the platform is not merely another AI tool, but a structured academic environment designed to simplify the research journey while preserving scholarly discipline and integrity.

The platform grew out of years of close interaction with students and researchers who struggled with literature review development, source organisation, referencing consistency, chapter structure, analytical flow, and supervisor corrections. Prof. Ilo noted that recent evidence makes the intervention increasingly necessary, citing a study that found students' use of AI tools rose dramatically from 66 per cent in 2024 to 92 per cent in 2025.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Head of Department, Theatre Arts, Prof. Awaritoma Agoma; the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UniAbuja Chapter, Prof. Sylvanus Ugoh; and Prof. Olympus Ejue of the Department of Theatre Arts, believe that structured AI-assisted research ecosystems may influence the future of postgraduate education across African universities. They lauded Prof. Ilo for the initiative, describing it as a groundbreaking contribution to academic research and innovation.

The academics agreed that Thesis-SpeedWrite would help reduce the tension between lecturers and students over AI use by shifting the conversation from unrestricted AI generation to guided academic workflows rooted in transparency, structure, and scholarly accountability. They noted that the platform has the potential to transform scholarly writing, improve research quality, and position Nigerian universities at the forefront of responsible AI adoption in higher education.
