Unified opposition group delays planned August 18 gathering

The G100, a coalition of opposition politicians, has postponed its Summit of Opposition Political Parties, initially set for August 18, to Monday, August 31, 2026, after engaging in discussions with six participating parties and members of the House of Representatives' Minority Caucus.

This decision was made public through a statement released by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the G100 on Thursday, citing the need to avoid conflicting with the National Peace Summit scheduled for August 18.

The National Peace Summit, expected to convene leadership and key stakeholders from participating parties, prompted the G100 to reschedule its event, allowing for additional time to facilitate internal consultations and preparation.

Following discussions with the parties and the Minority Caucus, a consensus emerged that postponing the G100 Summit would be beneficial, enabling the group to capitalize on the momentum generated by the National Peace Summit.

Over the past few days, the G100 has engaged in comprehensive talks with the leadership of six opposition parties and members of the Minority Caucus, characterizing these consultations as open, meaningful, and promising.

The seriousness and enthusiasm with which the parties approached these conversations have been particularly encouraging, with a clear understanding that this moment is crucial for Nigeria's democracy and that the opposition must interact with greater intention and structure.
