UK Trip: Tinubu's Policies Misunderstood Due to Lack of Knowledge and Ulterior Motives, Says Information Minister

The Federal Government has pushed back against criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's policies, characterizing much of it as the result of misinformation and intentional malice.

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris made these comments during a meeting with international media representatives in the United Kingdom, ahead of the president's state visit to the country.

Idris acknowledged that the administration's reform policies have been met with criticism both domestically and internationally, but argued that many of these reactions stem from a lack of understanding of the government's goals and the economic challenges facing Nigeria.

According to Idris, "We know that Nigeria has had its own fair share of criticism about some of those policies that were instituted back home, some of the criticisms arise from a lack of adequate knowledge, while others are simply borne out of sheer mischief."

The minister emphasized that the Tinubu administration's reforms are intended to reposition Nigeria's economy and put it on a more sustainable growth trajectory.

Idris noted that the government's engagement with international media outlets is part of an effort to provide clarity on its policies and communicate its reform agenda to a global audience ahead of the president's visit.

The upcoming state visit is significant, Idris said, as it highlights the long-standing strong relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

According to the minister, the visit presents an opportunity to deepen cooperation between the two countries in several key sectors, with Idris stating "This visit is significant in many ways, it underscores the historic and strategic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom — a relationship built on deep diplomatic, economic, cultural and democratic ties."

Idris highlighted the robust collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom in areas such as trade, education, security cooperation, and cultural exchange, saying "For decades, our two countries have sustained a partnership that spans trade, education, security cooperation, cultural exchange and shared democratic values."

President Tinubu's visit is expected to expand bilateral cooperation in key areas including trade and investment, security collaboration, climate action, education, and technological innovation, according to Idris.

The minister also noted that the visit reflects Nigeria's growing influence as a major democratic and economic partner in Africa, as well as its role in global affairs, saying "It also reflects Nigeria's growing importance as a key democratic and economic partner in Africa and a responsible participant in global affairs."

During the visit, President Tinubu is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with British officials, business leaders, and members of the Nigerian diaspora, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
