Troops detain 14 alleged impostors in nation's capital

Soldiers from the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army have taken 14 individuals into custody on suspicion of masquerading as officials of the Nigeria Forest Guard, amid allegations that they were making unauthorized arrests within the Federal Capital Territory. The apprehension of these suspects is a significant development in the Army's efforts to maintain law and order in the region.

The arrests were made at approximately 5:20 p.m. on June 5, during a routine patrol conducted by troops from the 7 Guards Battalion in the Mpape area of Bwari Area Council.

According to security sources, the group of suspects was intercepted while allegedly carrying out arrest operations, falsely claiming to be personnel of the Nigeria Forest Guard, which raised suspicions and prompted the soldiers to intervene.

The soldiers subjected the suspects to preliminary questioning and searches, during which a round of 9mm ammunition and other items were recovered, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of the ammunition.

Authorities are currently investigating the group's claimed affiliation with the Nigeria Forest Guard, and the 14 suspects are being held in military custody, where they will undergo further interrogation and possible legal proceedings.

Security agencies have issued a warning to the public, advising them to exercise caution and verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent government security organisations, in order to avoid falling victim to impersonation.
