Tributes pour in as Okpebholo, Oshiomhole and several others pay respects to late Catholic Archbishop of Benin

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and former governor, now senator, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, have paid tribute to the late Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, who passed away while on vacation abroad, just one month shy of his 70th birthday.

The governor's Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, issued a statement in which Okpebholo expressed his sorrow over the cleric's death, describing it as a painful loss to the Christian community, Edo State, and Nigeria as a whole.

According to the governor, Archbishop Akubeze was a humble shepherd and courageous advocate for justice, peace, and good governance, distinguishing himself throughout his ministry with his remarkable commitment to these values.

Okpebholo also noted that the late archbishop was a man of deep faith, wisdom, and uncommon humility, who dedicated his life to serving God and uplifting humanity, consistently speaking out for justice, peace, unity, and the welfare of the poor.

The governor further stated that the archbishop's passing is a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but also to Edo State and the nation, as he was a respected spiritual father whose counsel and commitment to truth inspired many people both within and outside the Church.

Okpebholo assured the Catholic community of the Edo State Government's solidarity and support during this period of mourning, and urged all Edo people, regardless of their religious beliefs, to pray for the peaceful repose of the departed cleric.

Senator Oshiomhole, on the other hand, described the late cleric as a courageous witness to the Gospel, a compassionate shepherd, and a humble servant of God, whose simplicity, accessibility, gentleness, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice earned him the admiration and respect of both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

In a condolence statement released by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole expressed his profound shock and heartfelt sadness upon receiving the news of the Archbishop's death at the age of 69, noting that Archbishop Akubeze lived a life that faithfully reflected his episcopal motto, Ut Testimonium Perhibeam Veritati—”That I may bear witness to the Truth.”

Oshiomhole reflected on his interactions with the Archbishop during his years as governor, saying he was always impressed by the Archbishop's profound intellect, deep spirituality, rich pastoral experience, openness to differing opinions, and unwavering confidence in God's providence.

The senator stated that the Archbishop's counsel was measured, his convictions were principled, and his life was a testament to selfless service, leaving a lasting legacy that will be deeply missed.
