Tragedy Strikes as Imo King's Return to Homeland Turns Deadly

When Eze Paulinus Ezekureme boarded a flight back to Nigeria after nearly five years abroad, he probably imagined a different homecoming.

He was returning not merely as a father or elder, but as the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, A monarch whose prolonged absence had left many of his subjects yearning for his return. For many in Ochia, their king had finally come home.No one imagined they were counting down to his final journey.

Journey that ended in flames

Barely weeks after settling back into community life, Eze Ezekureme left Ochia alongside five members of his cabinet on April 10, 2026. Their destination was Owerri, the Imo State capital.

According to police findings, armed men intercepted their Toyota Sequoia somewhere along the route. Moments later, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

By the time help arrived, there was little left to rescue.

n

The monarch and the five men travelling with him had been burnt beyond recognition.

The horrifying images quickly spread across Imo State.

n

Like many violent attacks in the South-East in recent years, the killings were immediately blamed on unknown gunmen. But there were no obvious suspects, and no group claimed responsibility.

Suspicion

For residents already weary of recurring violence, it appeared destined to become yet another unresolved tragedy. But, as Saturday Vanguard gathered, detectives refused to close the file.

The investigation formally began after the monarch’s younger brother, Ewneme Justice, reported the killings to the police.

n

Homicide detectives attached to the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad said the gruesome crime scene marked the beginning of painstaking investigative work.

One of the investigators, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Every movement, every telephone call, every meeting and every relationship was examined. The first question we asked was: Who knew the victim’s movements? That became our central focus.

“From there, we began reconstructing the monarch’s final hours, interviewing family members, community leaders, associates and residents in an effort to determine who knew he would be travelling that day. What we uncovered gradually changed the direction of the investigation.”

Instead of focusing solely on external attackers, Saturday Vanguard learnt that detectives began examining whether information about the monarch’s movements had been known in advance and whether individuals within the community may have played different roles before the ambush.

The arrests

Acting on intelligence gathered over several weeks, police operatives carried out coordinated operations that led to the arrest of several persons of investigative interest.

Police said three of those taken into custody were interviewed as part of ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.

According to investigators, they are examining allegations that the two men out of the three suspects escorted the monarch shortly before the attack. The investigation tends to ascertain whether information about the monarchs movement might have been communicated to those who later carried out the ambush.

Detectives as gathered were examining whether he might have provided financial or logistical assistance to other individuals under investigation.

Breakthrough

Investigators said another breakthrough came from a witness statement.

According to police, a witness identified simply as Obi provided information that detectives believe could help explain events leading to the killings.

The witness allegedly told investigators about a meeting held in March 2026 at the premises of an oil company, where issues relating to petroleum operations and community affairs were discussed.

He also reportedly mentioned individuals identified only by the aliases ”Acid,” “Morocco,” “SARS Man” and ”Thunder,” and supplied telephone numbers that detectives believe may assist in tracing communications among persons of investigative interest.

Police said they were also examining whether anything that transpired before, during or after that meeting had any connection with the monarch’s death.

Digital trail

As part of the investigation into the deaths of the monarch and his cabinet members, detectives, Saturday Vanguard gathered, have recommended forensic examination of recovered mobile phones, call records, location history, electronic messages and financial transactions.

A police source said: “We are also tracing bank accounts allegedly linked to some persons under investigation as part of efforts to determine whether money changed hands before or after the killings.

“Despite the severe burning of the victims’ bodies, post-mortem examinations have also been recommended to establish the precise causes of death and preserve scientific evidence should criminal charges eventually be filed.”

Community searching for answers

For residents of Ochia, the investigation has reopened painful conversations. One resident, who identified himself simply as Chionye, asked: “How could men who left home for a community engagement never return? How did the attackers know exactly where to strike? Was it simply a random attack, or was there information that made the ambush possible? These are the questions we are asking.”

As of the time of filing this report, the investigation was still being handled by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad, led by ACP Victor Godfrey.

According to the police, “efforts are ongoing to apprehend other persons of investigative interest, including one Elumah, also known as Acid, while forensic examinations, digital analysis and intelligence gathering continue.

“The investigation is being conducted in line with the directives of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, with emphasis on intelligence-led policing, lawful investigation and strict adherence to due process.

n

The police reiterated that the investigation remains ongoing and that all individuals mentioned are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
