Tinubu meets British Prime Minister Starmer, observes signing of massive £746m port investment agreement

President Bola Tinubu engaged in a high-stakes meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Monday, focused on fortifying the bond between Nigeria and the UK, as well as amplifying economic cooperation. The encounter was designed to yield significant outcomes, including the signing of multiple agreements.

A statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, revealed that the meeting would culminate in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding and agreements, encompassing trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation.

A pivotal aspect of the visit was the signing of a £746 million financing deal, facilitated by UK Export Finance, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Federal Ministry of Finance, aimed at refurbishing two vital maritime infrastructures.

The refurbishment projects target the Lagos Port Complex and the Tin Can Island Port Complex, aligning with Nigeria's objectives to modernize its transport and trade infrastructure, thereby driving economic growth.

The statement underscored Nigeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, attracting foreign investment, and stimulating infrastructure-led economic growth, as reaffirmed by the engagements.

Earlier in the visit, President Tinubu and the First Lady were formally received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, as part of the state visit.

The Nigerian delegation accompanying President Tinubu included prominent figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Prince Lateef Fagbemi, and Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake.

Other key officials in attendance included Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa, and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani.

The delegation also comprised Minister of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa, National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Mohammed Mohammed, among others.
