Tinubu leaves British capital following landmark official trip

President Bola Tinubu departed London on Thursday night, marking the end of a two-day historic visit that was initiated by the royal family, with the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by his side.

The presidential couple had embarked on the journey from Abuja on Tuesday, March 17, heading to the United Kingdom for a State Visit as esteemed guests of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

King Charles III played host to President Tinubu and his delegation, including the First Lady, at the prestigious Windsor Castle, from Wednesday, March 18, to Thursday, March 19.

This state visit was a groundbreaking moment, as it was the first of its kind by a Nigerian leader in 37 years, further solidifying President Tinubu's place in history.

Additionally, President Tinubu holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian leader to receive the honour of being hosted by the British monarch at Windsor Castle.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom boast a rich and enduring history of ties, as well as a special bond that has been cultivated over time.

The primary objective of the visit was to fortify bilateral relations and enhance collaboration on key issues, including immigration, trade, investment, and cultural exchange, between the two nations.

During their stay at Windsor Castle, Their Majesties extended an invitation to the President and the First Lady to view a unique exhibition showcasing items from the Royal Collection that were related to Nigeria.

Later, the King and the President engaged in private discussions and convened with organisations that promoted interfaith dialogue, both at the national and international levels.

The Royal Family organised a state banquet in honour of the Nigerian guests, which served as a grand gesture of hospitality and goodwill.

President Tinubu utilised the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, resulting in an expansion of bilateral engagement between senior officials of the two countries.

The meeting ultimately led to the signing of various Memoranda of Understanding and agreements, encompassing trade, investment, defence, and cultural cooperation, among other areas.
