Tinubu gives nod to transformation of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa into a specialist university

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to be upgraded into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, as part of his efforts to bolster the country's technical education sector.

This move is in line with President Tinubu's vision to enhance human capital development and tap into Nigeria's vast solid minerals potential, according to a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

The upgrade was prompted by a proposal from Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District, and made a strong case for a specialised institution to be established in Nasarawa State to leverage its solid minerals sector and support Nigeria's industrialisation agenda.

The newly upgraded university will offer world-class education, research, and innovation in fields such as mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies, with the goal of producing a skilled workforce to drive value addition and technological advancement in the nation's mineral resources sector.

The presidential directive reflects President Tinubu's commitment to aligning Nigeria's tertiary education system with national development priorities, as outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda, by establishing specialised institutions that address the country's economic needs and leverage its competitive advantages.

President Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to initiate the necessary processes to implement the conversion, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration's commitment to investing in education as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, job creation, and national prosperity, underscoring the importance of this sector in Nigeria's development.
