Tinubu calls on journalists to scrutinize state and local governments with same level of oversight applied to his own presidency

President Bola Tinubu urged media executives to hold state and local governments to the same level of scrutiny as his administration, emphasizing the need for rigorous monitoring of all levels of government.

During a meeting with media proprietors, executives, and members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Tinubu noted that state and local governments now enjoy greater financial autonomy under his administration.

Tinubu stated that local governments are now receiving their funds directly, and it is up to the media to ensure that these funds are being utilized effectively, saying "But how they use it is in your hands, so don’t bombard me alone."

The President also encouraged the media to examine the performance of sub-national governments, highlighting the importance of accountability at all levels of government.

Tinubu claimed that no state in Nigeria is currently borrowing to pay workers' salaries, attributing this development to reforms implemented by his government.

He acknowledged that while progress may be slow, it is essential to manage available resources effectively to sustain the present and make progress in the future, saying "Yes, we can complain it’s not enough."

Tinubu praised the media for their relentless criticism, which he believes has driven him to perform better, despite facing harsh commentary during his early days in office.

He expressed gratitude to the media for inspiring and challenging him, saying "Thank you for inspiring me and challenging me in critical moments of my life."

Tinubu admitted to being a daily reader of newspapers, which he described as "an addiction," and acknowledged that he was initially "a little stubborn" due to intense media scrutiny at the start of his administration.

Regarding policy decisions, including the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, the President defended his actions, stating that tough choices were necessary to prevent Nigeria's economic collapse.

Tinubu emphasized that critics should not be viewed as enemies, but rather as contributors to nation-building, noting that their feedback reflects concern for the country's welfare.

He accepted full responsibility for the outcomes of his policies, saying "I accept the asset and liability of my policies because I asked for the job and it was given to me."

The President addressed the challenges facing media organizations, including funding and tariffs, and assured that the government would take necessary action to support the sector.
