Tinubu: APC established to address poverty and insecurity issues

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his belief that criticism of the Electoral Act 2026 is unjust to the Nigerian people, while also acknowledging that the reforms implemented by his administration have been accompanied by difficulties.

The All Progressives Congress, according to President Tinubu, was established as a means to bring about national transformation, with the goals of reducing poverty, enhancing security, and rebuilding the country's institutions.

Speaking at the party's 4th Elective National Convention, which was held at Eagle Square in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized that the APC was not created solely to win elections, but rather to serve as a catalyst for effective governance and national development.

The party's founders, as noted by Tinubu, came together with the shared objective of rescuing Nigeria from economic decline and positioning it for growth and stability, with the ultimate goal of creating a nation where institutions function efficiently and opportunities are accessible to all.

The current convention, according to Tinubu, marks a pivotal moment for the party to reaffirm its core values, strengthen its unity, and recommit to its founding vision, as embodied in the theme "Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda".

President Tinubu also dismissed allegations that the APC seeks to establish a one-party state, emphasizing instead that democracy relies on the presence of credible opposition and healthy competition among political parties.

Tinubu criticized the persistent attacks by opposition figures on the proposed Electoral Act 2026, describing them as a disservice to both the Nigerian people and the democratic process.

Regarding his administration's reforms, President Tinubu acknowledged that the path to economic recovery has been challenging, but stressed that difficult decisions are necessary to achieve long-term national prosperity.

He maintained that his government deliberately chose to implement reforms rather than maintain unsustainable policies, noting that "no economy grows by sustaining wasteful subsidies or dysfunctional priorities".

Despite the challenges posed by global economic pressures, including the impact of the US-Israel-Iran tensions, President Tinubu stated that his administration has made significant progress in key sectors, particularly infrastructure, with ongoing investments in major road projects and superhighways.
