Timeless tradition of purifying historic pathways brings people together in the Delta region

A four-kilometre stretch of earth in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State, has long served as more than just a connector between the communities of Obecha and Okpai Obeze, instead weaving them into a single cultural fabric.

This singular bond is revitalized annually through a tradition where one community takes on the task of clearing the winding road between them using cutlasses and brooms, a ritual that ultimately brings them together in a show of kinship.

This year, the responsibility of clearing the path fell to Okpai Obeze, and on March 13, 2026, they embarked on the painstaking process of removing branches and debris, an act that is in itself a demonstration of respect and honour.

Upon completing the clearing, the community came together in a vibrant cultural procession and made their way to Obecha, where they were greeted by the Odogwu Abi of Obecha, Chief Okwudili Famous Olise.

The reception that followed was more than a simple greeting, as the visitors were led to the palace of the Okpala of Obecha, Chief Adinkwu Joseph Obungwu, where the atmosphere was filled with the sounds of traditional dances and the aromas of communal feasting.

The gathering brought together people of all ages and positions, from elders and youths to leaders and townsfolk, creating a celebratory atmosphere reminiscent of a huge carnival.

Chief Ogbunmor Sunday Obi, President-General of the Obecha community, viewed the gathering as a continuation of a long-standing tradition that serves to strengthen the bond between the two communities, describing it as an important reminder of their enduring connection.

Chief Okwudili Famous Olise, the Odogwu Abi of Obecha, urged the younger generation to preserve this tradition, emphasizing that the customs that link the two communities are not relics of the past, but living symbols of peace.

Chief Uzorechi Isaac, the Odogwu Abi of Okpai Obeze, described the annual ritual as a symbol of the friendship and mutual respect that exists between the two communities.

Fellow Odogwu Abi, Chief Anthony Nwogo, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of such traditions in maintaining harmony between neighbouring communities.

While the physical act of clearing the road was completed on that day, it was clear to those who walked it, sharing in the music, dance, and feasting, that they were tending to something far more profound and lasting.
